Our Deckhand Training Courses are tailored to suit your needs, ensuring you receive personalized attention throughout your learning journey. We leave no stone unturned, making sure you are fully equipped with the essential skills and knowledge demanded by the Superyacht industry. From Training to building your network and landing that first job. We are here for it all.

Choosing the entry-level package will give you the basic knowledge. Nevertheless, we highly suggest taking some extra courses to enhance your skills and set yourself apart from other entry-level team members. This will enable you to shine brightly.

Remember, you can continuously pursue more courses after completing your first season.

In this 5 day course, you will learn the following skills and understand what is required of you to become a Deckhand onboard a Superyacht :

STCW

International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 sets minimum qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships and large yachts.

This consists of 5 different modules such as:

  • Maritime Fire Fighting
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  • Designated Security Duties
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Elementary First Aid

 

When working on Yachts 80m/500Gt and above you will need to add more Safety courses.

PWC Proficiency Jestki

The RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency certificate is used all over the world by Superyacht deck crews, Yachtmasters, charters, and rescue and safety services. This training course gives a great introduction into safe driving for anyone using PWCs (Jet Skis).

Our one-day training course is the doorway to this exciting watersport. The course is mainly practical starting with an introduction to the main parts of the PWC and safety equipment and features. Later progress to rules of the road and higher speed turns.

Powerboat Level 2

RYA Powerboat Level II is an introductory powerboat training course that is a must-have for anyone wishing to work in the superyacht industry.

This ticket gives you the license to drive a small powerboat (Tender) often used on the Superyachts to take crew or guests to shore.

The course covers everything from launching and recovering the boat, safety equipment on board, navigation rules, understanding of spending time on a small vessel, and practical onboard skills. It is perfect for those looking to work in the Superyacht industry and get the experience they need to be successful. With RYA Powerboat Level II you will also have access to our experienced instructors who can help you get the most out of your course. 

VHF SRC SAMSA RADIO

A radio is a highly important piece of safety equipment on board, which is why it is vital to understand the correct usage procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call. The Marine Radio Short Range Certificate is a one- day course that caters to anyone who owns or operates a fixed/ handheld-marine VHF radio. Furthermore, this certificate is required by law if you operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Course topics include:

  • The basics of radio operation
  • The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
  • Distress, emergency, and medical assistance procedures
  • Making ship-to-shore telephone calls
  • Digital Service Calling (DSC) using simulators
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
  • Emergency Position including Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
  • Search and Rescue (SART)

 

The Course consists of 3 parts:

  1. Pre-Learning – we send you some vital information to learn before the course
  2. Course – One full day covering all the topics mentioned above
  3. Exams – On the same day you write the exams and we submit the papers on your behalf

Yacht Rating

The Yacht Rating Certificate is required by the crew on Superyachts to be part of the safe manning of a vessel from 200Gt and above. This course requires you to have 6 months of Yacht service and 2 months of experience at sea. Once you have logged all your hours & miles and the captain has signed it off, you can apply for your certificate through the MCA and be qualified.

  • Steering and helm orders
  • Keeping a proper lookout and lookout duties (Navigational Watch)
  • Monitoring and controlling a safe watch
  • Shipboard terms and definitions
  • Life-saving and firefighting equipment
  • Importance of musters and drills
  • Common knots, bends and hitches
  • Handling of mooring lines
  • Care, use, and storage of ropes and wires
  • Safe operation of mooring winches, windlass and capstan
  • The importance and safe operation of watertight doors, hatches, and hull openings
  • The Code of Safe Working Practices
  • Engine watch-keeping duties
  • Terms used in machinery space and the names of machinery and equipment
  • Pollution Prevention

Tender Operations

The Yacht Captains and the Professional Yacht Association (PYA) along with the RYA recognized the need for more skilled and knowledgeable tender skippers. This course is for the Superyacht crew to drive the yacht tenders. It will be a perfect stepping stone to the Advanced Powerboat course and exam.

This Course teaches tender driving up to the required standard to carry passengers and other crew members to and from the Superyacht by day and night.

Jetski - Deck / Stew Training

PWC Proficiency Jetski Instructors

This course requires you to have your basic PWC as well as experience and gives you the authority on board to instruct guests to enjoy these pleasure crafts themselves if not having a license already.

This course will give you the confidence and knowledge to take proper care of the passengers as well as the Jetski so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience on board.

Open Water Padi

Want to become a scuba diver? The Open Water Diver Course teaches you the fundamentals of scuba diving and sets the foundation for all the other scuba dive courses. This course allows you to scuba dive independently with a certified buddy, to a depth of up to 18 meters.

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is one of the best of its kind in the world through which to learn to dive. It is conducted by one of our certified PADI Instructors.

Open Water Diver Course:

  • Minimum duration: 3 days
  • Preparing for the course: Once you sign up, you will receive a theory to do. This is homework to do before you come for the course.
  • Day 1: Scuba diving sessions in our swimming pool in Sea Point.
  • Days 2 and 3: Four scuba dives total in the ocean around Cape Town
  • You get the option to come for more pool training sessions in the pool to build confidence
  • Your diving course can be constructed around your schedule. You do not need to do the course in 4 consecutive days!
  • Bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, towel, and a snack.
  • Minimum age: PADI junior open water diver – 10 years
  • PADI open water diver – 15 years

Accredited by Highfield, this course is a mandatory requirement for individuals working in the Interior department (and naturally, those handling food) on a Superyacht.

The certification equips you with the knowledge to comprehend the significance of food safety and the shared responsibility held by all individuals engaged in food storage, preparation, cooking, service, and handling.
