Crafting Your Perfect Superyacht CV

Embarking on a career in the Superyacht Industry requires a polished and professional CV.

Your CV is your first introduction to potential employers and a critical element in your job search.

At Pull North, we review hundreds of yachting CVs and are in constant communication with yachts seeking crew.

Based on our experience, here are some common mistakes and additional tips to help you create a standout CV:

Overuse of Colourful Boxes in Your CV Layout

  • Colourful boxes may seem visually appealing but can occupy valuable space needed for showcasing your experience.
  • They can waste printer ink and sometimes result in unreadable text.
  • Recruitment software struggles with such designs, which can lead to your CV being overlooked.
  • Stick to a clean, simple layout that emphasizes your skills and experience.

Condensing Your CV to One Page

  • A two-page CV is more appropriate, allowing you to include essential information such as your profile, qualifications, past positions, hobbies, and references.
  • Don’t be afraid to provide detailed information about yourself.

Not Including References

  • Always list your referees at the end of your CV, allowing agencies and potential employers to contact those you’ve previously worked with.
  • Ensure your references are current and their contact details are accurate.

Spelling and Grammar Errors

  • Use software tools to check for errors, and have someone else proofread your CV.
  • A polished CV demonstrates professionalism and attention to detail.

Omitting Dates or Descriptions for Work Experience

  • Include precise dates for your employment periods, specifying months and years.
  • Describe your previous roles in detail, including your responsibilities, what you learned, the number of guests and crew, and the areas you covered.
  • Write in full sentences to give a comprehensive view of your experience.

Inappropriate CV Photo

  • Your CV photo should be professional and appropriate for the yachting industry.
  • Avoid selfies, pouting, or dark and blurry images.
  • A clear, well-lit photo with a plain background, showing you in a white or navy polo, is ideal.
  • A friendly smile makes you appear approachable and positive. PLEASE SHOW YOUR TEETH.

Missing Personal Information

  • Always include your mobile phone number (with country code), current location, and date of birth at the top of your CV.
  • This ensures employers can easily contact you and understand your time zone.

Not Specifying Your Desired Position or What You Offer

  • Clearly state the position you are seeking at the top of your CV, usually under your name.
  • In your personal profile, highlight what you can bring to the employer rather than focusing solely on what you want from the job.
